Hawk Security Sneaky Practices
I knowingly signed a three year agreement with Hawk Security and honored it. I even stayed with the company for a year and a few months longer. I called to cancel service today and they told me my contract won't be up until next April and there is no way to cancel without having to pay the entire year either in full or monthly until April. When I said I had I had never been sent any renewal notices they said they did not have to and it was automatically renewed as per the contract.
After I got over the initial anger and came to grips with the fact that I had not read the contract carefully enough (or they glossed over it very well during the signing) I told the customer service rep. to not allow any renewals for next year for any reason.
I then went in search of my contract, but could not locate the document. I called customer service again and asked one be sent to me just so I could double check. I asked this customer service rep. to be sure my desire for no new renewals was on record. He stated it was, but it would not matter as the cancellation needed to be received in writing. WHAT???? I guess the other rep. forgot to mention that. Had I not asked I would have been stuck for another year.
I take responsibility for not reading the contract well enough, but everyone needs to know Hawk Security's contract and cancellation policies are at the very least questionable but more like predatory. Stay away if possible and find another agency with more customer friendly cancellation policies.

Sounds like a class action lawsuit might be in order. A lot of people seem to be very unhappy with Hawk "Security."
Good luck with that. .
.almost all security companies do this.
Yep! The same exact situtation here.
Just called to cancel the 3year contract and learned we have to stay with them another year due to my signing and NOT READING the small print. NOT a happy camper but Live and learn.
I will be writing my cancellation notice after I finish my comment. Watch 'em!
Log complaint through Better Business Bureau website. After I did that they worked with me in doing esrly cancellation. Good Luck.
Great! Thank you for the info. Will do.
My mother is in the same situation as you. Hawk renewed her contract for a year twice with no notification.
Now she moved and wanted to cancel and she has to buy her way out. .... Come to find out that is illegal in texas as of sept 1, 2007. I confirmed with another alarm company.
What they are doing is a clear case of deceptive practice.
I am just the little guy trying to spread the word. But if anyone has the means they should class action these folks.
What law makes this illegal in Texas? I would love to know.
pretty much all companies are like that now--not just security companies--any time you have a year or more contract they do sneek that auto renew on you--now here's the sneeker part--they bill 30 days in advance--example--your contract ends in june--they have already taken out june payment in may--so when you call or write them in june to cancel at the end of the month--they have already charged you for june and renewed your contract for another year because june payment is really july's payment--
